Light for the Last Days

SHORT TALK

Let’s move on to what the Bible says. According to my understanding, we are in the last days of this age, which means that time is running out. Bible prophecy has been fulfilled and one of the areas which it refers to is the environment.

  • First Seal: The Conqueror
  • Second Seal: Conflict on Earth
  • Third Seal: Scarcity on Earth
  • Fourth Seal: Widespread Death on Earth
  • Fifth Seal: The Cry of the Martyrs
  • Sixth Seal: Cosmic Disturbances
Revelation 6

In Revelation chapter 6, you have the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse who ride out bringing about false prophets, false Messiahs followed by war, famine, and mass death.

In the prophecies, you have a picture of a general world crisis in the last days resulting from the system falling apart but you also have the coming together of nations in a new world order aimed at creating a centralized global control system via organizations like the UN, the World Economic Forum, increased power being given to China as an antichrist dictatorship which is backed by high-tech measures and which are favored, incidentally, by the WEF.

Now the Bible does indicate that, in the last days, there will be a crisis in the environment with an increase in famines, plagues, and natural disasters.

The question we have to ask now is: ‘Is it God or is it man who controls the weather?

The answer: ‘Ultimately God, but fallen humanity has its part to play too.

We have to say that the things happening, from the biblical point of view, are also part of a sign of God’s judgment on human sin and unbelief which ties in with the end of days scenario.

When we look at what the Bible says from the beginning, we have a mandate which God gave to the human race to look after the planet in Genesis chapter 1:

26 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28 Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

Genesis 1.26-28

Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion …

I don’t think that means for humans to have control and exploit the earth and its resources, it means have control and look after it, care for it, look after the world which God has made.

Genesis chapter 1 tells us that God made a good world, a very good world, a perfect world and He gave human race the responsibility to care for it as His regent or custodian here on the earth to look after that world He made.

Representation

Unfortunately, you only have to read the next two chapters and you find that things go wrong. The fall of man happens and Satan enters into it a serpent and tempts Adam and Eve to break the only command God gave them: not to eat from the fruit of the tree of knowledge of Good and Evil.

As a result, sin comes into the world, and we have what we call The Fall. We see that this affects the environment. In the curse that God gives to Adam, He says,

17 … “Cursed is the ground for your sake;
In toil you shall eat of it
All the days of your life.
18 Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you,
And you shall eat the herb of the field.
19 In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread
Till you return to the ground,
For out of it you were taken;
For dust you are,
And to dust you shall return.”

Genesis 3.17-19

That tells you that one of the results of The Fall is that the earth itself is going to be no longer very good. Thorns and thistles represent a deterioration. All kinds of other things really come into play here that are going to make this good world which God made less perfect.

Of course, death comes in as a result of sin. If you move on to the next big event in the Bible, to The Flood, it causes another huge change in the environment.

You have the flood in which Noah builds the ark and saves humanity after God curses the Earth because of its sin and, after the flood, the Lord says in His heart, in Genesis 8:

“I will never again curse the ground for man’s sake, although the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth; nor will I again destroy every living thing as I have done.

22 “While the earth remains,
Seedtime and harvest,
Cold and heat,
Winter and summer,
And day and night
Shall not cease.”

Genesis 8.21-22

The last verse there is a promise that God is going to preserve the world until the end of the age. In other words, we are not going to destroy it by ourselves. Seeding time and harvest time is going to continue.

It is also interesting that He speaks about cold and heat, winter and summer. If you understand the cosmology of the creation, the story before The Flood did not include cold and heat, you did not have winter or summer, you had a uniform good greenhouse effect because of the way in which God had created the world and the atmosphere.

The Earth was very much more fruitful and abundant than it is today. After The Flood that abundance went and you have now cold and heat, winter and summer, but God says it is going to continue until the end of the age.

In the Old Testament, you have very much a connection between sin and things going wrong in the environment. The Book of Deuteronomy chapter 28 speaks of the Judgment which is going to come upon Israel if they don’t obey the Lord. It says,

18 “Cursed shall be the fruit of your body and the produce of your land, the increase of your cattle and the offspring of your flocks.

19 “Cursed shall you be when you come in, and cursed shall you be when you go out.

20 “The Lord will send on you cursing, confusion, and rebuke in all that you set your hand to do, until you are destroyed and until you perish quickly, because of the wickedness of your doings in which you have forsaken Me. 21 The Lord will make the plague cling to you until He has consumed you from the land which you are going to possess. 22 The Lord will strike you with consumption, with fever, with inflammation, with severe burning fever, with the sword, with scorching, and with mildew; they shall pursue you until you perish. 23 And your heavens which are over your head shall be bronze, and the earth which is under you shall be iron. 24 The Lord will change the rain of your land to powder and dust; from the heaven it shall come down on you until you are destroyed.

Deuteronomy 28.18-24

Deuteronomy 28 speaks about the earth being subject to God’s judgment, about a lack of rain and this is a result of disobedience to the Lord. The prophets also tell you some of these things happening. In Jeremiah chapter 14, it says,

“Judah mourns,
And her gates languish;
They mourn for the land,
And the cry of Jerusalem has gone up.
Their nobles have sent their lads for water;
They went to the cisterns and found no water.
They returned with their vessels empty;
They were ashamed and confounded
And covered their heads.
Because the ground is parched,
For there was no rain in the land,

The ploughmen were ashamed;
They covered their heads.
Yes, the deer also gave birth in the field,
But left because there was no grass.
And the wild donkeys stood in the desolate heights;
They sniffed at the wind like jackals;
Their eyes failed because there was no grass.

O Lord, though our iniquities testify against us,
Do it for Your name’s sake;
For our backslidings are many,
We have sinned against You
.

Jeremiah 14.2-7

I am not saying that all bad weather is because of sin, but we have to say that there is a correlation here between a problem in the environment and the sin of the people. If you look at the state of the world today, you can see that wherever you look, people are doing things that are totally contrary to the will of God. So, there is a sense in which the troubles which are coming on us at this time in the environmental area are connected to the sin of the world.

This also means that there is a call from God to repent and to turn back to Him.

Additionally, when you look in the Bible, it is very clear that, in the last days, there is going to be a global crisis which will involve some kind of pollution of the earth.

Isaiah 24 verse 5 says,

The earth is also defiled under its inhabitants,
Because they have transgressed the laws,
Changed the ordinance,
Broken the everlasting covenant.
Therefore the curse has devoured the earth,
And those who dwell in it are desolate.
Therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned,
And few men are left.

Isaiah 24.5-6

The word ‘defiled‘ could also be translated as ‘polluted’ under its inhabitants. The Earth lies polluted or defiled under its inhabitants: there is a connection between what is going wrong with the world and the actions of its inhabitants.

In Romans chapter 8, it says that

19 For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope; 21 because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation groans and labours with birth pangs together until now.

Romans 8.22

The whole creation groans and labours with birth pangs as it eagerly awaits for the revealing of the sons of God. That means the Second Coming of Jesus. The whole creation is groaning like a woman in labour as it waits for the Second Coming of Jesus.

There is an effect upon the world caused by human sin which is causing people, causing the creation itself to long for the Second Coming of Jesus to set it free from this defilement which is coming from the human race.

When Jesus spoke of the times of the end, He said:

25 “And there will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring26 men’s hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 27 Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory28 Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near.”

Luke 21.25-28

Jesus speaks about this time which is coming, which will cause this distress on the earth, which will affect the environment and will result in famines.

In the last days, Jesus says,

For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of sorrows.

Matthew 24.7-8

10 … “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. 11 And there will be great earthquakes in various places, and famines and pestilences; and there will be fearful sights and great signs from heaven.

Luke 21.10-11

In Revelation chapter 6 we read:

When He opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, “Come and see.” So I looked, and behold, a black horse, and he who sat on it had a pair of scales in his hand. And I heard a voice in the midst of the four living creatures saying, “A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius; and do not harm the oil and the wine.”

Revelation 6.5-6

A denarius was the kind of pay a person gets for a day’s wages in Roman times. In our time, you might say £50 or £60. For that amount of money, you are going to get a quart of wheat which is a very small amount of food. Therefore, the Bible is speaking here of famine, of scarcity, one of the signs of the last days.

Revelation chapter 8 speaks about environmental disasters: trees dying, drying up, trees being burnt up, fish dying in the sea, waters polluted and undrinkable, and the sun blotted out.

The first angel sounded: And hail and fire followed, mingled with blood, and they were thrown to the earth. And a third of the trees were burned up, and all green grass was burned up.

Then the second angel sounded: And something like a great mountain burning with fire was thrown into the sea, and a third of the sea became blood. And a third of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed.

10 Then the third angel sounded: And a great star fell from heaven, burning like a torch, and it fell on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water. 11 The name of the star is Wormwood. A third of the waters became wormwood, and many men died from the water, because it was made bitter.

12 Then the fourth angel sounded: And a third of the sun was struck, a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third of them were darkened. A third of the day did not shine, and likewise the night.

Revelation 8.7-12

Chapter 16 says,

Then the fourth angel poured out his bowl on the sun, and power was given to him to scorch men with fire. And men were scorched with great heat, and they blasphemed the name of God who has power over these plagues; and they did not repent and give Him glory.

Revelation 16.8-9

Now, it is possible that human climate change may be responsible for some of these things, but it’s also much more likely that these calamities are to do with God bringing judgment upon the world in the last days.

There are natural expectations for this which are way beyond our control. For example, this one: the first Angel Revelation 8,

The first angel sounded: And hail and fire followed, mingled with blood, and they were thrown to the earth. And a third of the trees were burned up, and all green grass was burned up.

Revelation 8.8-9

Prophecy Newswatch had a quite an interesting comment on this verses. It said that if you had a coronal mass ejection (which is a major solar flare) that hit the earth, the effect would be to cause the red heat to come through the atmosphere, cause a hole in the atmosphere which in turn would have the effect of immediately dropping the temperature on earth significantly. This would trigger great hailstones to fall on the earth followed by fire falling on the earth and burning up the trees and the and the the grass.

This is exactly what would happen if you had a major coronal mass ejection from the sun hitting the earth and scientists are worried that there are now several ejections happening in the sun and that, if this were to happen it would cause the exact damage Revelation 8 speaks of.

In a second scenario, something like a great mountain burning with fire was thrown into the sea and the Third Trumpet announces the sea becoming blood with the living creatures of the sea dying, a third of the ships destroyed.

The great mountain falling into the sea, what could that be? Well, people are talking about asteroids falling on earth and, if that were to happen and an asteroid fell into the sea, it could cause exactly that as a result.

These would be judgments of God but they could just as well have a natural explanation as to why they are happening.

It also speaks about the fourth Angel which pours out his bowl on the sun with powers given him to scorch men with fire.

Then the fourth angel poured out his bowl on the sun, and power was given to him to scorch men with fire. And men were scorched with great heat, and they blasphemed the name of God who has power over these plagues; and they did not repent and give Him glory.

Revelation 16.8-9

Now, these things have been prophesied to happen in the last days before Jesus returns, they are to take place specifically in the time of the Great Tribulation.

What we are seeing happening now could be somehow like the foothills of this period of great tribulation although it is not the total, the final thing. These things happen and will continue to happen as a result of God’s judgment, not as a result of human activity.
