Light for the Last Days

The good news is that God has an answer to this problem, the problem of sin in the heart.

We already said that the Bible locates the problem of the human race in the heart of man.

“The heart is deceitful above all things,
And desperately wicked;

Jeremiah 17.9

Romans 7 says,

18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find.

Romans 7.18

18 But those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile a man. 19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies. 20 These are the things which defile a man, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile a man.”

Matthew 15.18-20

Our text from Matthew chapter 15.

So, if that’s the case, what do you need? You need a new heart. Does God offer you that?

Ezekiel chapter 36

26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them.

Ezekiel 36.26-27

Praise God! God has an answer to this problem!

It is not the problem brought about by the world, it is not the problem brought about by religion, it is the problem that lies in your heart and to which God gives you an answer: you can accept that now by just receiving a new heart through faith in Jesus.

God says He will give you a new heart and a new spirit. He will take out of your heart the heart of stone which does not respond to God and give you a heart of flesh which does respond to God.

He will give you a desire to keep God’s Commandments and to walk in them, and He will do that by putting His holy spirit within you. That is the offer of the Gospel spoken of here in Ezekiel.

It is not something spoken of in the future but rather, something in the now when Jesus addressed Nicodemus.

Nicodemus was a ruler of the Jews who came to Jesus by night and asked Him what He meant. We have the famous passage in John chapter 3 verse 3 where Jesus answers Nicodemus:

… “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?”

Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

John 3.3-8

You must be born again.

There is something wrong with your heart. You may not be a murderer, an adulterer, a criminal or a thief, but you have a sinful heart and, until you repent and believe in Jesus Christ, every one of us, including me,

23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

Romans 3.23

Yet, everyone who comes and calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. It is possible to be born again simply by asking Jesus to come into your life and believe in Him, being born of the Spirit.

And carrying on with John chapter 3, he says verse 14:

14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.

John 3.14-17

When Jesus died on the cross, God put all the foul sins of the human race upon Jesus that He may become the sin bearer and that He carry our sins. He died, He was buried, and He rose again on the third day to justify us and to give us the hope of eternal life.

If we repent and believe the Gospel, and put our sins upon Jesus, we can receive eternal life and know that we are God’s children. little diagram which illustrates this:

We have the human race here with a problem of sin under the penalty of death. We try to make it to God on the other side of this great gulf which separates us from Him by doing good deeds, by being religious, even by giving money to God, by being moral. But none of these things can bridge this gulf. It is too big. We can’t make it across.

Nothing can bring us to God by our own efforts. We can try, and religious people try, but they never make it to God because we can only come to God on His terms, which means that He makes the way for us from His side and saves us from eternal death.

That is the remedy of the Cross. When Jesus died on the cross, He came from Heaven to earth to bring us His message of Salvation, to die on the cross, to pay the price for our sins, to be buried, to rise again from the dead, and to cross that gulf which separates us from a Holy God.

That is the only way. That is the bridge to life. Only through faith in Jesus can the gulf be crossed.

The problem is sin, the answer is the death of Jesus. Jesus died and rose from the dead to bring us into faith in God. It is not enough to know this, we have to put it personally into practice.

If anyone is listening to me today either here in the church or on the Internet, you must be born again, you must take a step of faith to believe on the Lord Jesus, and to be delivered from the penalty of sin which is eternal death.

Come into the presence of God and receive eternal life. It is up to you. You have to make the choice.

I know that most of you here, probably 99% of you in here have made that choice, but we have to do it personally, and to believe on Yeshua / Jesus the Messiah in order to receive His gift of eternal life and forgiveness, and to get rid of that old heart which is full of sin while we receive a new heart which is Born Again into His righteousness and receives His Holy Spirit to dwell within us.

Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you shall be saved. God bless you! Put your trust in Him.

Let us just have a word of prayer. Lord, we thank you that your Word is true. We thank you that you have sent Jesus to die for us. We thank you that you are the One Way to receive eternal life and to receive forgiveness of sin.

We thank you above all that Jesus was willing to go to the Cross to pay the price. We acknowledge before you Lord that we do have a sinful heart which is far from you, and we pray Lord that you cleanse us from the sin that so easily besets us, and that you fill us with the Holy Spirit that we might be truly born again to eternal life and live our lives to your praise and glory. We ask this in the Name of the Lord Jesus, amen.
