Just 200 years ago the fastest you could travel anywhere was the speed of a horse, and the idea of exploring space was the stuff of fantasy. Now humans have succeeded in sending the Rosetta space craft on a ten year journey of nearly four billion miles, and landing its Philae module on comet 67P. The comet, which is 317 million miles away, is just 2.4 miles long and orbits the sun at speeds of up to 84,000 mph. There is no question that this is an extraordinary achievement of human ingenuity and technical progress. The technical skill which has made this landing possible is itself a sign of the last days in which, according to Daniel 12.4, ‘many shall run to and fro and knowledge shall increase.’
At the same time news reports about the probe show that while technical knowledge has increased and continues to increase exponentially year by year, wisdom has not. There was great anticipation that we were going to learn something about the origin of the universe and life on earth from exploring the comet: ‘Rosetta will tell us if a bombardment from comets billions of years ago created the Earth’s oceans and the building blocks of all living things. … The samples Philae collects will help scientists answer the question of whether a bombardment from comets billions of years ago brought water and simple organic molecules to Earth, paving the way for life.’ http://www.theguardian.com/science/2014/nov/12
Actually Rosetta didn’t tell very much because the probe ended up in the wrong place and ran out of power to relay much of the information back to base. What information they did receive ruled out the theory that the water on earth came from comets. As a result the newspapers had to conclude that ‘the answers to the origin of life on Earth may be trapped forever in the probe.’
The One who does have the answers to the origin of life was not impressed! All the immense amount of water on the earth, its oceans, rivers, clouds and ice caps could have come here as a result of a comet crashing into the planet? Life in its extraordinary complexity and intricate design arrived on the back of a lump of rock hurtling through space? As the French writer Anatole France once said, ‘If fifty million people say a foolish thing, it is still a foolish thing.’
The answers to our origins are recorded for us in the Bible. ‘In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.’ He also made the dry land and the seas and created all life forms, capable of reproducing ‘after their own kind’ as Genesis 1 teaches us. Denying God and the Bible, the human race has fallen for the evolutionary explanation for the origin of the universe and life on earth. This shows the truth of another scripture: ‘Professing to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man.’ Romans 1.22-3.
All of this ties in with the scripture in 2 Peter 3.4-7 of ‘scoffers’ coming in the last days who deny both the second coming and the actions of God in creation.
