Light for the Last Days

Wise men come to see Jesus

Matthew 2

“As the source of Daniel’s wisdom was not the stars but the God who made the stars no doubt his influence would have turned some of them away from paganism to faith in the God of Israel. Daniel’s prophecies were written in Aramaic and would have therefore been accessible to the Babylonians. In Daniel 9 he gives information of the time of the coming of the Messiah, the coming King of the Jews. The Babylonians who believed Daniel to be a prophet would have been able to work out from this passage that it was about the time for this King to arrive.”

  • Possibly the Magi were Jews; from a Hal Lindsey teaching. Only about 80,000 Jews returned from Babylon with the majority remaining domiciled in Babylon/ Persia. These Jews would have known from Daniel the time of the messiah’s birth and went to pay homage to the king of the Jews. Why would gentiles make such a dangerous and vast journey. Not many gentiles have loved the Jews from then unto Luther and now!

    • Thank you Graham. There are old Jewish communities throughout the Middle East and Asia, people who never returned to Israel and have kept their strong Jewish roots and the teachings of the Torah even till today. However, I’d like to think that faith from gentiles could have also triggered such a journey. After all:

“Now when Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to Him, pleading with Him, 6 saying, “Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, dreadfully tormented.” And Jesus said to him, “I will come and heal him.” The centurion answered and said, “Lord, I am not worthy that You should come under my roof. But only speak a word, and my servant will be healed. For I also am a man under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” When Jesus heard it, He marvelled, and said to those who followed, “Assuredly, I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel! 11 And I say to you that many will come from east and west, and sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 8.5-11
