Light for the Last Days

Daniel Bishop

Let’s open our Bibles please the Genesis chapter 3. We’ll be looking at from verses 1 to 21. it’ll also be on the screen also

Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?”

And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden; but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.’ ”

Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings.

And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.

Then the Lord God called to Adam and said to him, “Where are you?”

10 So he said, “I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself.”

11 And He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you that you should not eat?”

12 Then the man said, “The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I ate.”

13 And the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?”

The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

14 So the Lord God said to the serpent:

“Because you have done this,
You are cursed more than all cattle,
And more than every beast of the field;
On your belly you shall go,
And you shall eat dust
All the days of your life.
15 And I will put enmity
Between you and the woman,
And between your seed and her Seed;
He shall bruise your head,
And you shall bruise His heel.”

16 To the woman He said:

“I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception;
In pain you shall bring forth children;
Your desire shall be for your husband,
And he shall rule over you.”

17 Then to Adam He said, “Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it’:

“Cursed is the ground for your sake;
In toil you shall eat of it
All the days of your life.
18 Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you,
And you shall eat the herb of the field.
19 In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread
Till you return to the ground,
For out of it you were taken;
For dust you are,
And to dust you shall return.”

20 And Adam called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living.

21 Also for Adam and his wife the Lord God made tunics of skin, and clothed them.

Genesis 3.1-21

May the good Lord bless the reading of His Word.

‘Now the serpent was more subtle’.

When we think about the serpent, the text doesn’t really tell us who the serpent is, but let scripture interpret scripture. Revelation tells us who that serpent in Revelation 12.9 it says,

So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

Revelation 12.9

In Revelation 20.20 it says,

Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, having the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. He laid hold of the dragon, that serpent of old, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years;

Revelation 20.1-2

There was a real serpent in the Garden of Eden that was taking control of by the devil. It wasn’t a myth, it was true. Satan is not a physical being although he can operate in the spiritual and physical realms as evidenced by many scriptures:

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.

1 Peter 5.8

23 But He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are an offense to Me, for you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men.”

Matthew 16.23

But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself?

Acts 5.3

12 And the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your power; only do not lay a hand on his person.

Job 1.12

Satan is a spirit. Even the Lord Jesus had to demonstrate that He was in physical form after His resurrection, didn’t he? In Luke 24.39 what did he say? He said:

39 Behold My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself. Handle Me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see I have.”

Luke 24.39

Hallelujah! The Lord rose from the dead!

The Bible portrays Satan as a spirit and a spirit entered in to the serpent. We know that Satan is a spirit and that demons can enter into the living. We know this because Judas was entered into by Satan, wasn’t he?

Then Satan entered Judas, surnamed Iscariot, who was numbered among the twelve.

Luke 22.3

We know that Peter was influenced by Satan in Matthew 16.23. We also know that Legion, which consists on many demons, entered into the swine if we remember in Mark 5

12 So all the demons begged Him, saying, “Send us to the swine, that we may enter them.” 13 And at once Jesus gave them permission. Then the unclean spirits went out and entered the swine (there were about two thousand); and the herd ran violently down the steep place into the sea, and drowned in the sea.

Mark 5.12-13

And, in Matthew 8 we also see that, at certain times, when God is talking to someone, He is talking to the person and then, He talks to the person who is influencing him.

28 When He had come to the other side, to the country of the Gergesenes, there met Him two demon-possessed men, coming out of the tombs, exceedingly fierce, so that no one could pass that way. 29 And suddenly they cried out, saying, “What have we to do with You, Jesus, You Son of God? Have You come here to torment us before the time?”

Matthew 8.28-29

That person is Satan. We know this from Ezekiel chapter 27 verse 2. At first, in Ezekiel 27 verse 2 the Word of the Lord was to Tyre itself:

“Now, son of man, take up a lamentation for Tyre, and say to Tyre, ‘You who are situated at the entrance of the sea, merchant of the peoples on many coastlands, thus says the Lord God:

Ezekiel 27.2-3

Then, in Ezekiel 28, God speaks to the King of Tyre and in Ezekiel 28 verse 11, He then speaks to Satan directly who is influencing the King of Tyre. You can see how the good Lord knows who is spirit influencing the King of Tyre and says:

11 Moreover the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 12 “Son of man, take up a lamentation for the king of Tyre, and say to him, ‘Thus says the Lord God:

“You were the seal of perfection,
Full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.
13 You were in Eden, the garden of God;
Every precious stone was your covering:
The sardius, topaz, and diamond,
Beryl, onyx, and jasper,
Sapphire, turquoise, and emerald with gold.
The workmanship of your timbrels and pipes
Was prepared for you on the day you were created.

14 “You were the anointed cherub who covers;
I established you;
You were on the holy mountain of God;
You walked back and forth in the midst of fiery stones.
15 You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created,
Till iniquity was found in you.

16 “By the abundance of your trading
You became filled with violence within,
And you sinned;
Therefore I cast you as a profane thing
Out of the mountain of God;
And I destroyed you, O covering cherub,
From the midst of the fiery stones.

17 “Your heart was lifted up because of your beauty;
You corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendour;
I cast you to the ground,
I laid you before kings,
That they might gaze at you.

18 “You defiled your sanctuaries
By the multitude of your iniquities,
By the iniquity of your trading;
Therefore I brought fire from your midst;
It devoured you,
And I turned you to ashes upon the earth
In the sight of all who saw you.
19 All who knew you among the peoples are astonished at you;
You have become a horror,
And shall be no more forever.” ’ ”

Ezekiel 28.11-19

Now, God obviously wasn’t talking to the King of Tyre, He was talking to the person who was influencing the King of Tyre, the Devil, because the King of Tyre was never in the Garden of Eden.

That great Devil was in the serpent. The Lord knows who He’s speaking to.

In Isaiah 14, we also see that God was speaking to the King of Babylon, and sometimes He speaks to Satan directly.

12 “How you are fallen from heaven,
O Lucifer, son of the morning!
How you are cut down to the ground,
You who weakened the nations!
13 For you have said in your heart:
‘I will ascend into heaven,
I will exalt my throne above the stars of God;
I will also sit on the mount of the congregation
On the farthest sides of the north;
14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds,
I will be like the Most High.’
15 Yet you shall be brought down to Sheol,
To the lowest depths of the Pit.

16 “Those who see you will gaze at you,
And consider you, saying:
Is this the man who made the earth tremble,
Who shook kingdoms,
17 Who made the world as a wilderness
And destroyed its cities,
Who did not open the house of his prisoners?’

18 “All the kings of the nations,
All of them, sleep in glory,
Everyone in his own house;
19 But you are cast out of your grave
Like an abominable branch,
Like the garment of those who are slain,
Thrust through with a sword,
Who go down to the stones of the pit,
Like a corpse trodden underfoot.
20 You will not be joined with them in burial,
Because you have destroyed your land
And slain your people.

Isaiah 14.12-20

So, to conclude, there was a literal Genesis, there was a literal serpent. and there was a literal Devil in the Garden of Eden. We know this because, when God cast judgment in Genesis, He splits His decision into two judgments: one for the serpent and one for the devil.

1st Judgement on the snake

14 So the Lord God said to the serpent:

“Because you have done this,
You are cursed more than all cattle,
And more than every beast of the field;
On your belly you shall go,
And you shall eat dust
All the days of your life.

Genesis 3.14

2nd Judgement on Satan

15 And I will put enmity
Between you and the woman,
And between your seed and her Seed;
He shall bruise your head,
And you shall bruise His heel.”

Genesis 3.15

It wasn’t surprising that the Devil came to deceive, but what was rather unusual here was that Eve didn’t find it strange that there was a talking serpent. If I walk down the road and I see an animal start talking to me, I would think that it was a little bit strange.

Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?”

Genesis 3.1-21

However, Eve was made in a perfect world, wasn’t she? She would not have conceived evil, she would not have known evil. But Satan was very cunning (our adversaries are very cunning) wasn’t he?

21 And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. 22 Then the rib which the Lord God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man.

23 And Adam said:

“This is now bone of my bones
And flesh of my flesh;
She shall be called Woman,
Because she was taken out of Man.”

24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

Genesis 2.21-25

Satan hid his true form, he took on, he entered into a creature she would have seen many times in the Garden of Eden, a serpent. She would have seen serpents often, they were one of the creatures God made.

Satan hid his true form. Maybe if he and he showed himself in his true form, a spirit form in front of Eve, she may have run, she might have known who he was. He hid his true form.

Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them. And the Lord said to Satan, “From where do you come?”

So Satan answered the Lord and said, “From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking back and forth on it.”

Job 1.6-7

Furthermore he tempted the woman. Satan conceived Eve as the most vulnerable of the two Adam and Eve. This could be because God never instructed Eve to not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. That was said to Adam and Adam passed that on to Eve. The original message was to Adam and Satan may have conceived that she did not know God’s Word as well as Adam did.

15 Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”

Genesis 2.15-17

Satan will often attack the weakest part of the chain. That means, brothers and sisters, that we need to support each other. When we’ve got brothers and sisters together we are to lean on each other.

For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 who died for us, that whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with Him.

11 Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing.

1 Thessalonians 5.9-11

In Ecclesiastes 4.12 it says,

12 Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him.
And a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

Ecclesiastes 4.12

Together, shoulder to shoulder, back to back as a body of Messiah, we can defend against attacks.

  • It looks like God made Man and Woman weak though He is The Lord Almighty. So we need to keep close to Him and be obedient and careful and thankful for His Gift.
