Light for the Last Days

Ezekiel 38 – Today’s war scenario?

One more scripture which we will look at this morning is Ezekiel 38.

Somewhere into all this mix comes the prophecy of Ezekiel 38 which has never yet been fulfilled. It doesn’t seem to connect to any other passage in the scriptures, so we have some disagreements about where this prophecy comes into play.

Some say it comes before the Tribulation itself; some say it comes at the beginning of the Tribulation; others say it’s actually just the same as Armageddon, that it is the first stage of Armageddon.

Whatever it is it’s going to happen and it’s going to happen at a time when the Jewish people are back in the land. It says very specifically that this happens in the latter days, when the people have been scattered and are now back in the land of Israel.

As I said, there’s a huge amount to go through here, and I’ve only got quarter an hour left. So, I’ll go through just a few basic things.

Ezekiel 38:

Now the word of the Lord came to me, saying, “Son of man, set your face against Gog, of the land of Magog, the prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal, and prophesy against him, and say, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “Behold, I am against you, O Gog, the prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal. I will turn you around, put hooks into your jaws, and lead you out, with all your army, horses, and horsemen, all splendidly clothed, a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords. Persia, Ethiopia, and Libya are with them, all of them with shield and helmet; Gomer and all its troops; the house of Togarmah from the far north and all its troops—many people are with you.

“Prepare yourself and be ready, you and all your companies that are gathered about you; and be a guard for them. After many days you will be visited. In the latter years בְּאַחֲרִית הַשָּׁנִים [bǝʾaḥărît haššānîm] you will come into the land of those brought back from the sword and gathered from many people on the mountains of Israel, which had long been desolate; they were brought out of the nations, and now all of them dwell safely. You will ascend, coming like a storm, covering the land like a cloud, you and all your troops and many peoples with you.”

10 ‘Thus says the Lord God: “On that day it shall come to pass that thoughts will arise in your mind, and you will make an evil plan: 11 You will say, ‘I will go up against a land of unwalled villages; I will go to a peaceful people, who dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates’— 12 to take plunder and to take booty, to stretch out your hand against the waste places that are again inhabited, and against a people gathered from the nations, who have acquired livestock and goods, who dwell in the midst of the land.

13 Sheba, Dedan, the merchants of Tarshish, and all their young lions will say to you, ‘Have you come to take plunder? Have you gathered your army to take booty, to carry away silver and gold, to take away livestock and goods, to take great plunder?’ ” ’

Ezekiel 38.1-13

Just to comment on those verses. It says here specifically that an alliance is going to come together in the latter days. The phrase which is used in Hebrew of the last days בְּאַחֲרִית הַשָּׁנִים [bǝʾaḥărît haššānîm] before the day of the Lord, before what we would call the Second Coming of Yeshua.

It says it will come after Israel has has been restored to the land. It also says that, at the the time, they will be dwelling ‘safely’ לָבֶ֖טַח [lābeṭaḥ]. It doesn’t say ‘peaceably’ as it does in the Authorised Version. The Hebrew word is lābeṭaḥ which means ‘with security’. Now, some say, ‘Well, that doesn’t fit in with the present situation. Israel obviously is not dwelling safely in the land. There’s no security‘. I’ll come back to that in a moment.

The main players are a great power to the north, elsewhere spoken of as ‘the uttermost north’ with either the Chief Prince or the Prince of Rosh translating niss Ros Chief Prince. This could mean the Chief Prince, Chief, the Ruler of Rosh which means ‘head’.

But Rosh can also mean Russia. Russia or the Prince of Rosh, and a lot of interpretations going back even to the 19th century have people saying that this prophecy is about Russia coming against Israel. How did these interpretations come about? In the 19th century, how would Russia come against Israel? It doesn’t seem to make sense. Yet, now Russia has troops in Syria, Russia is increasingly allied with Persia (Iran) and other countries in this list. And Russia is taking an increasingly hostile attitude towards Israel.

At the present time Russia is deeply involved in Ukraine which has turned out to be a military disaster for Russia as it has lost a lot of its troops and armament. So, how could Russia now take on another conflictive situation? If Russia is willing to do so, then, I would say that something has to happen in Ukraine, either a resolution of the conflict or a win. There would have to be some kind of resolution whereby Russia gets its troops out and then it’s ready for another conflict.

So, it’s probably not going to happen right away, and because of the security situation someone has said that this can’t happen until there is a peace agreement which gives Israel some security. This means that it would have to be after the Daniel 9 situation.

24 “Seventy weeks are determined
For your people and for your holy city,
To finish the transgression,
To make an end of sins,
To make reconciliation for iniquity,
To bring in everlasting righteousness,
To seal up vision and prophecy,
And to anoint the Most Holy.

25 “Know therefore and understand,
That from the going forth of the command
To restore and build Jerusalem
Until Messiah the Prince,
There shall be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks;
The street shall be built again, and the wall,
Even in troublesome times.

26 “And after the sixty-two weeks
Messiah shall be cut off, but not for Himself;
And the people of the prince who is to come
Shall destroy the city and the sanctuary.
The end of it shall be with a flood,
And till the end of the war desolations are determined.
27 Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week;
But in the middle of the week
He shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering.
And on the wing of abominations shall be one who makes desolate,
Even until the consummation, which is determined,
Is poured out on the desolate.”

Daniel 9.24-27

We will see. I’m not making definite prophecies, I’m just telling you what the Bible says.

Ezekiel 38 also mentions Persia. Now, Persia we can identify clearly with Iran, the main enemy of Israel today, active in the Middle East and causing trouble. Iran is active in Syria, in Lebanon to the North of Israel. You also have Togarmah which is possibly Turkey, Kush and Put which are Sudan and Libya, which don’t seem to have anything to do with it at the present time but where Russia is involved. Both of those countries are in some kind of civil war and both of them are Islamic countries.

Is it possible this could happen? As I said, Russia is already involved in Syria, to the North of Israel. It has an air base in Syria, it has two Naval bases in Syria.

Russia is also allied to Iran. In fact, Iran has just given Russia a whole lot of drones to attack Ukraine with. And it is beholden to Iran now because of that.

So, there’s a deepening alliance between those two countries. Both countries are ruled by extremely nasty people at the present time.

Russians are very nice people. I have been to Russia and love the Russian people. I also love a lot of Iranian friends here. I love the Iranians but their governments are horrible one has to say. And they are doing all kinds of terrible things causing suffering to the people themselves there.

So, could this be? Could the West tire of arming Ukraine and Russia actually win the war? Is that possible?

Turkey is also on the side of Hamas and is part of NATO which complicates things. But it is becoming increasingly friendly with Russia. Therefore, this war is going to come before the Tribulation, in the middle of the Tribulation period or at the end of the Tribulation, we shall see.

18 “And it will come to pass at the same time, when Gog comes against the land of Israel,” says the Lord God, “that My fury will show in My face. 19 For in My jealousy and in the fire of My wrath I have spoken: ‘Surely in that day there shall be a great earthquake in the land of Israel, 20 so that the fish of the sea, the birds of the heavens, the beasts of the field, all creeping things that creep on the earth, and all men who are on the face of the earth shall shake at My presence. The mountains shall be thrown down, the steep places shall fall, and every wall shall fall to the ground.’

Ezekiel 38.18-20

It has to be said that there is an alternative view which is held by Joel Richardson who wrote a book called The Islamic Antichrist. He says that it’s not Russia at all, it’s Turkey, and that the Gog Magog war is the first part of Armageddon, which is led by the Mahdi the Islamic faith leader who will come in the last war against Israel.

Again, these things we’ll have to see. I try to just give you the possibilities, I’m not giving you the definite interpretation of how it’s going to happen. But these things are there in the scriptures and, if they’re in the scriptures, they are going to happen at some time sooner or later.

You also have an interesting me reference to Sheba and Dedan and the ‘young lions’ of Tarshish. Who are these people? Sheba and Dedan protest against the war, they say,

13 Sheba, Dedan, the merchants of Tarshish, and all their young lions will say to you, ‘Have you come to take plunder? Have you gathered your army to take booty, to carry away silver and gold, to take away livestock and goods, to take

Ezekiel 38.13

Sheba and Dedan are almost certainly countries on the Arabian peninsula. The young lions of Tarshish, well, Tarshish was at the far west of Israel in Bible times. So, the countries of Tarshish look like Spain and the countries beyond. This may therefore be a reference to the Western Alliance, to NATO.

Europe, America, these countries could say to Russia, ‘What are you doing? You’re coming against Israel. We don’t agree with this invasion‘. They will protest but will do nothing because God intervenes and God destroys this army as it comes against Israel. That’s the scenario in Ezekiel 38. It certainly hasn’t happened yet. At some point, it will happen in the days before the Second Coming of Jesus.
