Light for the Last Days

44 Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.

Matthew 24.44

How do you get ready? You get ready by believing in Jesus and receiving the Holy Spirit. Because it could happen at any time. The implication here is that we should be ready all the time to meet with Jesus.

So, that is the idea of imminence, that it could happen any time. Be ready then, at any time for Jesus to come. Be ready all the time.

This is one of the arguments which I think does fit in with the pre-Tribulation Rapture point of view. Because, if the rapture only comes at the end of the Tribulation then, there are a whole lot of things which haven’t happened yet which have to happen before Jesus comes. Therefore, the rapture could not be imminent.

14 The sower sows the word. 15 And these are the ones by the wayside where the word is sown. When they hear, Satan comes immediately and takes away the word that was sown in their hearts. 16 These likewise are the ones sown on stony ground who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with gladness; 17 and they have no root in themselves, and so endure only for a time. Afterward, when tribulation or persecution arises for the word’s sake, immediately they stumble. 18 Now these are the ones sown among thorns; they are the ones who hear the word, 19 and the cares of this world, the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things entering in choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful. 20 But these are the ones sown on good ground, those who hear the word, accept it, and bear fruit: some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some a hundred.”

Mark 4.14-20

On the other hand, if the rapture is to occur pre-Tribulation, it can be imminent; it can happen at any time.

Now, the message that comes with this to us is to be ready at any time, all the time. To be ready to meet with Jesus.

How do you get ready to meet with Jesus? You repent of your sins, you believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you set your life to follow Him.

Also, if you have believed in Jesus, then, you should allow Jesus to change you from inside, to change you into the person He wants you to be.

In 1 John, it says that,

And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.

1 John 3.3

So, part of the motivation for believing this is to allow God by the Holy Spirit to change us into the person He wants us to be that we may be ready to meet with the Lord.

And if you have this idea in your mind then, actually, you’re going to be want to be ready to meet with the Lord at any time, because He can come at any time. It is a powerful motivation to follow Jesus and to be ready to meet with Him.

We do not know the day or the hour when He is going to come. We also do not know the day or the hour of our death. Therefore, we should be ready at all times to meet with Him. We should be ready by repenting of sin, believing the Gospel, and receiving the Holy Spirit; by being born again of His Holy Spirit while also using the time that remains to serve the Lord.

If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.

John 15.7-8

As we see the growing darkness on the earth, we do not panic, we lift up our heads because our Redemption is drawing near and we use the time that remains to share the Good News of the Gospel to bring people to faith in Jesus Christ.

Going back, in all of these passages in Matthew’s Gospel uh Jesus is speaking about the need to be ready, to be ready for His return. It is a strong theme which is one which we need to take note of.

42 Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming. 43 But know this, that if the master of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched and not allowed his house to be broken into.

Matthew 24.42-44

This is another image Jesus uses. The image of ‘the thief in the night’, the thief coming to rob you in your house. As I’ve said before, if a thief is coming to to rob you in your house, he’s not going to tell you the time he is going to come, he is going to come unexpectedly.

So, we need to be ready all the time.

44 Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.

Matthew 24.44

therefore you also be ready for the

We don’t know the day or the hour, but we do know that He is coming and if you can believe that God has intervened in the very big ways which he has done in the past, you can also believe that God is going to intervene in the very big way which He is going to act at the Second Coming of Jesus.

I believe that He is going to do that. I believe that it’s the only hope we have for the world.

As you see all the bad news taking place, all the bad news that could make people despair and give up, yet, if you believe the Gospel, if you believe in Jesus, then you do not despair, you do not give up because you know that there is a great hope in Jesus the Messiah coming back again. This time, not as a Suffering Servant but this time coming back as King of kings and Lord of lords, with all the power of God at His disposal to put the world to rights.

Therefore, put your trust in Jesus. Believe in Him, and be ready for His return.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct your paths.

Proverbs 3.5-6

I don’t know the day or the hour, but I do believe it’s coming and it maybe coming soon.

Be ready for Jesus to return but also be ready for your life to continue because we don’t know the day or the hour, we don’t know exactly when He is coming. So, we should also plan out our lives as though we have our whole lives before us without anything to stop us from leading a good and sensible life.

Sometimes, people take this message on board and then they say, ‘Well, I’m going to just sort of sit around and wait for the Messiah to come.‘ That’s not what He says. He says, ‘Occupy yourself till I come. Make use of your life, continue to live your life in God’s will.‘ If you have a family, provide for your family, get a job, work for your living if you can. And live a life which is pleasing to God.

But be always ready for the coming of the Lord because He could come at any time.

17 Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.

1 Thessalonians 4.17

Put your trust in Jesus and, hopefully, this encourages you to believe not just that Jesus is coming again but also that the Word of God is true. That It is true from Genesis right through to Revelation, and that it reveals us to God who is consistent in the way He deals with us. God who is Holy, who is loving, but who also deals with sin.

Sin cannot be accepted in God’s sight, so we have to repent and believe, and put our lives right with God through faith in Jesus.

18 We know that whoever is born of God does not sin; but he who has been born of God keeps himself, and the wicked one does not touch him.

1 John 5.18
