Can you explain why you believe?

God expects us to be able to give a reason for the hope that is in us. As you read in 1 Peter 3 verse 15,

But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defence to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness (humility) and fear (respect);

1 Peter 3.15

We live in a world with lots of beliefs and changing views and you always get some new thing coming on the horizon. But God doesn’t always tell us that we have to know every single possible flavour of what’s happening.

We’re blessed to have many good teachers who can help unpack that for us and do good works in those areas but, at the very least, each believer should be able to give a defence of their faith, give a defence of why they believe in Jesus, why they believed in the Gospel and their hope.

As we read God’s Word, it prepares us for our works of righteousness, it prepares us for the good works He has for us.

So, unless we know God’s Word, unless we mature and grow and move ‘from milk to meat’ (Hebrews 5:12), we won’t really be able to give a good defence of the Word.

Therefore, another reason to regularly read God’s Word is to continuously get to know God’s Word, know what it means, know why we believe what we believe, not just what we believe.
