Light for the Last Days

THE QUEEN’S FAITH

As we mourn the death of our beloved Queen Elizabeth II, we are happy to know that she is safe in the arms of the Lord whom she loved. Her faith was a guiding principle throughout her life of service, as she acknowledged on many occasions.  She was known to have a well-read Bible by her bedside.

Here are some things she said about her faith:

“I have been very grateful to God for His steadfast love. I have indeed seen His faithfulness.”

Queen Elizabeth II

“For me, the life of Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace, whose birth we celebrate today, is an inspiration and an anchor in my life… Christ’s example has taught me to seek to respect and value all people, of whatever faith or none.”

Queen Elizabeth II (Christmas message)

“For me, the teachings of Jesus Christ and my own personal accountability before God provide a framework in which I try to lead my life. I, like so many of you, have drawn great comfort in difficult times from Christ’s words and example.”

Queen Elizabeth II

“None of us can slow the passage of time; and while we often focus on all that has changed in the intervening years, much remains unchanged, including the Gospel of Jesus Christ and His teachings.”

Queen Elizabeth II

The Gospel message tells us that Jesus Christ died for our sins, was buried and rose again the third day.  Through repentance and faith in His death and resurrection we can have hope that when we die we will rise to eternal life in His kingdom.  As He said to Martha, one of His followers,

‘“I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

Martha replied, ‘Yes Lord I believe that You are the Messiah, the Son of God who is to come into the world.’

John 11.25-27

At the end of his tribute to the Queen at the service of thanksgiving for her reign at St Paul’s Cathedral on June 3rd, Stephen Cottrel, Archbishop of York, said:

‘She is someone who has been able to serve our nation faithfully because of her faith in Jesus Christ.  Perhaps no better way than celebrating her platinum jubilee than by doing the same ourselves.’

Stephen Cottrel, Archbishop of York

A good way to remember her now, as she passes from this life to the next.
