Light for the Last Days

It’s happening now…

1. Environmental activists warn we have only a few years

to save the world. They say climate change is leading to catastrophe which is already beginning with increase of drought, fires, storms, floods, sea level rise.

2. Wars and conflicts around the world, with a focus on the Middle East.

Social unrest, violence and crime increase in many parts of the world

3. Advances in technology bring about a globalised world

with new ways of buying and selling without cash. The man in the picture above is buying a train ticket in Sweden with a microchip implanted in his hand.

What is the connection between these things? For details read on.

These news items tie in with prophecies of the Bible about the Second Coming of the Messiah Jesus.

1. Bible prophecies indicate an environmental crisis

in the last days of this age. There will be an increase of famines and earthquakes (Matthew 24.7). Trees will be burnt up, fish will die in the sea, fresh water will be polluted and scarce (Revelation 8.7-11). There will be great heat (Isaiah 24.4-6, Revelation 16.8-9), which will cause many to die. There will be an increase of great storms and cosmic disruption on earth making people afraid of what is coming on the world (Luke 21.25-8, Revelation 6). Only the physical return of the Lord Jesus will save the world from destruction.

2. The world will become increasingly violent and full of conflict

in the last days. Nation will rise against nation and wickedness will increase (Matthew 24). There will be conflicts between nations and social unrest and violence within nations. Dangerous times will come when people will be

‘lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, … lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God.’

2 Timothy 3

The Middle East will be a particular centre of world attention. The return of the Jewish people to Israel is prophesied in the Bible as a sign of the last days (Ezekiel 36, Jeremiah 30-31, Zechariah 12-14, Luke 21.20- 33). An alliance of nations will come against Israel in the last days (Ezekiel 38-9, the War of Gog and Magog) and be defeated by God’s intervention. The last battle will be over Jerusalem (Zechariah 14, Revelation 19) and will bring about the return of the Messiah (Yeshua / Jesus) to the earth, when He will bring in the final age of peace.

3. In the last days there will be an increase in technology, world trade and travel:

‘Many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase.’

Daniel 12.4

This will bring in a global trading and finance system, which will bring great wealth to some while trapping multitudes in poverty (James 5, Revelation 18). Out of it will emerge a control system under one known as the beast or the antichrist (Revelation 13). Accord- ing to the book of Revelation he will bring in the 666 system, whereby people need a number and mark to buy and sell (Revelation 13.16-18). The ‘cashless society’ with payments made by card with microchips, and the development of biometric ID systems linked to computers and the Internet are preparing the way for this system.

The Bible also warns that in the last days many people will mock and reject its message (2 Timothy 3-4, 2 Peter 3). Biblical family values will be under attack. The ideal of one man married to one woman, caring for their children and staying faithful to each other ‘till death us do part’ is rejected, causing confusion and insecurity for many (Luke 17.28-29, Revelation 17.1-2). As the antichrist spirit gains control in more and more nations there will be persecution of Christians (Luke 21.12-18) and anti-Semitism (Jeremiah 30.5-11, Daniel 12.1).

These events are pushing the world in the direction of the Great Tribulation, the final 7 year period of trouble on earth which will precede the second coming of Jesus. At some time in this process Jesus will come and take those who believe in Him in the event known as the rapture of the church.

‘For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive will be caught up to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. There- fore comfort one another with these words.’

1 Thessalonians 4.16-18)

To be ready for this event, believe that Jesus is the Messiah who died for our sins and rose again from the dead. At His first coming He fulfilled Bible prophecies of the Suffering Servant Messiah (Isaiah 53, Psalm 22, Daniel 9.26). At His second coming He will fulfil the prophecies of the Reigning King Messiah when He will bring peace and justice on earth in the period known as the Millennium or Messianic Kingdom, (Isaiah 2, Revelation 20). After this, the present earth and universe will be burned up and God will create a new heavens and new earth which will be the eternal dwelling place of all believers. (Revelation 21-22). Now is the time to make your choice and accept salvation and avoid hell by repenting of sin, and believing the Gospel.

‘God … now commands all people everywhere to repent, because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained (Jesus the Messiah). He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead.’

Acts 17.30-31

Ask God to save you by praying along these lines: ‘Lord God, I believe that Jesus died for my sins and rose again from the dead to give eternal life to all who call on His name for salvation. I am sorry for my sins and ask you to forgive me and give me eternal life and to come into my life as Saviour and Lord. In Jesus’ name, Amen.’
